How Did Bridal Showers Come About?

!±8± How Did Bridal Showers Come About?

Bridal showers seem to be a common affair these days, no matter which country you live in. History has it that these all girls gathering came about in Belgium in the 1800s. Apparently, these showers were held when a poor lady's family did not have the money to offer as dowry for the wedding or even to organize it. It was also held when a father refused to acknowledge, participate or pay for the wedding because he did not approve of it. In such instances, the womenfolk of the town came together during the bridal shower and offered gifts to the bride so she could use them as a dowry and marry the man of her choice.

Thankfully what seemed like a sad occasion has evolved over the years to become a cheerful party where all the girls get together and share a few laughs about getting married. This is when bridal shower favors are presented to the bride to be. More often than not, these are items that can be used in the bedroom, bathroom or if the bride enjoys cooking, in the kitchen. To make the party more interesting, you could have various bridal shower themes. A suggestion would be a Lingerie Shower where all the girls have a sleepover at the home of the bride or bridesmaid, and go dressed in their nightwear. Typical favors for the bride to be on this occasion would include bed and bath gifts, bikinis or sexy outfits. If the girls enjoy their food, the theme for the party could centre on recipes and each guest will be asked to cook her favorite dish and take it to the party venue. This would be more of pot luck and favor ideas for this event could be kitchen items or even the new pots and pans that you are serving the bridal shower food in.

If the bride has friends from multi-cultural backgrounds, this fact could serve as a theme for the hen night. Each lady could arrive with food representing her country. This could be sushi, pasta or curry, depending on her country of origin. The sushi could be presented on Japanese plates and this would be a great wedding shower favor for both the bride and groom. The curry could be given in an earthenware pot which adds flavor to the dish. It could be accompanied by a rack of spice bottles and these could be marvelous wedding favors that would be treasured for a long time.

As you, the bride, gather with the girls, you may wish to discuss the flowers that you are thinking of having for the wedding. Generally, these are seasonal and your choice of bouquets really depends on when your wedding is. Naturally, summer is a great time for Azaleas, Lilies, Tulips, Pansies and Daffodils. Fall is when you will see Chrysanthemums and Dahlias while winter sees the blossoming of Heather and Poinsettia and the much loved Rose. Baby's Breath, Gerber Daisy, Carnations and Orchids can be obtained all year round and ideally should be ordered in advance to avoid disappointment.

Most married women will tell you that it is a beautiful time in your life, when you get to plan your wedding and look forward to that wonderful day when you will be joined in matrimony with the one you love. So, make the best of the time you have to prepare for this occasion and here is a little tip to keep you smiling, A little girl at a wedding asked her mother afterwords why the bride changed her mind. 'What do you mean?' responded her mother. 'Well, she went down the aisle with one man, and came back with another.'
